Mila 2.0 is the first book in an electrifying sci-fi thriller series about a teenage girl who discovers that she is an experiment in artificial intelligence.
Mila was never meant to learn the truth about her identity. She was a girl living with her mother in a small Minnesota town. She was supposed to forget her past—that she was built in a secret computer science lab and programmed to do things real people would never do.
Now she has no choice but to run—from the dangerous operatives who want her terminated because she knows too much and from a mysterious group that wants to capture her alive and unlock her advanced technology. However, what Mila’s becoming is beyond anyone’s imagination, including her own, and it just might save her life. (From Goodreads, 11th September 2013)
Mila 2.0 is an interesting novel with an interesting theme. Mila does not realise she is actually a computer, an advanced computer designed by the military. But Mila is more than that. She is more human than anyone would have thought. To save herself from being wiped clean Mila must learn to use her inbuilt abilities, that she was unaware off, and evade capture by those who see her as a failed prototype.
I really enjoyed Mila 2.0, reading it in one day! It is a fast paced young adult novel with all the ingredients to keep teens intrigued and turning the pages. We begin with a normal teenagers life at a new high school, a romance, rivalry, and then quickly the novel develops into a very abnormal teenage story. A story that involves running from those who created you, those who want to capture you, those that want to sell you. Debra Driza does an excellent job at understanding the emotions that one may go through in such a situation, and expresses these excellently. Although no teenager would suddenly find out they are a top secret military creation, I am sure many teenagers will relate to the emotions of shock, disbelief and the unknown of where they belong.
Mila 2.0 was a novel I was hesitant about reading, but I am thankful that I have done so. I look forward to finding out what happens to Mila and thus this is a series I will continue reading.
Emotional, dramatic, shocking, action packed. A novel for those who are maybe slightly more reluctant readers because soon they will be drawn into the world Mila is finding out about, and they will not want to leave.
